Dr. Matthews received his medical degree from New York Medical College after having graduated with a degree in chemistry from Emory University. He trained in general surgery at the University of Connecticut program in Hartford before a residency in urology at Lenox Hill Hospitalin New York City. After residency, he decided to focus his clinical expertise on male infertility. He accepted an American Foundation for Urologic Disease (AFUD) Scholarship and became a fellow at the Population Council Center for Biomedical Research at Rockefeller University, New York, NY. There he studied molecular regulation of spermatogenesis. He completed a fellowship in male reproductive biology and microsurgery at New York Hospital/Cornell Medical Center. He was invited to join the faculty of New York Medical College in 1995 and became Chief of Urology at Metropolitan Hospital in New York in 2000.
Dr. Matthews has co-authored over twenty papers published in peer review medical journals and written chapters for urology textbooks. His work has been published in the New England Journal of Medicine, the Journal of Urology, Fertility Sterility, and in the Journal of Surgical Oncology. He has lectured at national and international Urology Society meetings.
Dr. Matthews is an expert in Male Reproductive Medicine, performs the no scalpel vasectomy procedure as well as vasectomy reversal. He performs microsurgery for men with complex infertility issues such as varicocele, and vas obstruction. He works with reproductive endocrinologists intreating infertile couples. He performs testicular sperm aspiration for in vitro fertilization and other assisted reproductiuve techniques.
Dr. Matthews also evaluates and treats male sexual dysfunction. This includes erectile dysfunction (ED). ejaculatory disorders, and evaluation of libido (sex drive/desire) disorders. While the majority of men can be helped with medical therapy, Dr. Mathews also performs surgical implants in the treatment of erectile dysfunction.
Dr. Matthews lectures to support groups and medical centers on the evaluation and treatment of infertility and breakthroughs in ED management. He is a member of the American Medical Association (AMA), American Urological Association(AUA), and is a Fellow of the American College of Surgeons (ACS). He is a member of the Societe Internacional Urologie (SIU) and Society for the Study of Male Reproduction, and the Sexual Medicine Society. He has been board certified since 1998 and was recertified in 2005.
